Vantage Points: The best place to observe
movements into the yard, within the yard, and onthe main
lines is from Storrs Hill Road overbridge which crosses
the eastern throat of the yard. Park in Bridge Close 50yds
from the bridge. From this point it is possible to see all
parts of the yard and with the aid of binoculars obtain
most locomotive numbers. The bridge offers a good vantage
point for photography. Turn 180 degrees and part of the
Marcroft wagon works which lies to the east of the bridge
is visible.
Half way up the hill on Storrs Hill Road is a lay-by from
which it is possible to observe the yard and westbound main
line from the comfort of a car. However the eastbound running
line is obscured.
For closer views the public footpath running along the
northern boundary is to be commended. The path commences
10 yds from the depot entrance. Walk along the path until
the path forks and there is a stile. At this point double
back towards the old water tower which offers the best close
up views of stabled locomotives. Note that at this point
you are on Railtrack property. Keep well clear of the main
running line. Photography is possible but challenging as
most shots are into the sun.
Visit Permits: EWS advise that permits
are not issued for visits to the depot or yard.
Do not attempt to enter the yard from the west
end by the signal box. Signalmen are instructed to call
BT police in the event of trespass in this area.
Location: Healey Mills depot and yard
are located some 4 miles west of Wakefield Kirkgate Station
on the line from Wakefield Kirkgate to Huddersfield. As
the facilities are located between the running lines look
out of the right-hand window (facing the direction of travel)
at all times for views.
To reach Healey Mills by public transport board an Arriva
bus nos 128, 129, 231 or 232 at Wakefield Bus Station or
in Westgate adjacent to Wakefield Westgate railway station
and alight at the Bingley Arms in Horbury Bridge. Journey
time approx 18mins. Walk back towards Wakefield crossing
the river Calder. Turn left into Bridge Road before The
Ship Inn and fork left into Storrs Hill Road at the Horse
& Jockey Public House. Continue along Storrs Hill Road
and the yard is on the left-hand side where the road crosses
over the railway . The official entrance is a further 100yds
on the left-hand side. A public footpath runs along the
northern boundary another 10 yards further. Walking time
approximately 10 minutes.
By Road from the M1 North: Leave the M1 at junction 39
and take A636 towards Wakefield. Straight on over two roundabouts
and through one set of traffic lights. Turn left into Thornes
Road immediately after passing under the railway. Continue
into Thornbury Road (bearing right) and at the end turn
left onto A642 Horbury Road.(BP garage on left at junction).
Continue along this road passing back underneath the M1
and onto Horbury By-pass. Eventually the road narrows and
goes downhill before passing over the railway. Cross the
railway and take the third turning on the right into Old
Bridge Street. Turn right at the Horse & Jockey into
Storrs Hill Road
From Leeds and M1 South : Leave the M1 at junction 40 and
take A638 towards Wakefield. At the second set of traffic
lights turn right into Queens Drive and pass back under
the motorway. At the end turn left into Station Road. Continue
to the traffic lights and turn right into Manor Road. At
the end of this road turn left and turn right immediately
after the pedestrian crossing into Storrs Hill Road. The
yard is at the bottom of the hill on the right hand side.
