Rail against congestion
IT could be the end of the line for traffic congestion in Ossett and Horbury after councillors suggested getting the old train station back on track.
In the past, Ossett, Horbury and Sitlington have been served by three train stations, Horbury Junction, Millfield Road and Ossett and Horbury Station.
Now there are no stations in the area – just ever-increasing queues of traffic on the roads.
This week's news about a new rail link in Glasshoughton, Castle-ford, got councillors thinking that the towns should have an improved travel network.
Reduced Arriva bus services to Leeds, combined with more residents moving to the area, and more building planned, means more cars and traffic gridlock.
The bottleneck at Horbury Bridge, where roads from Ossett, Horbury and Netherton all meet, create lengthy tailbacks into Wakefield and Huddersfield.
Coun Brian Holmes has inquired about the possibility of a station being reinstated as a way of easing traffic chaos and giving the residents back a transport link that serves their needs.
He said: "It would be a great idea. The original platform of the station at Horbury Bridge is still there."
Coun Holmes said he raised the issue of having a station for Horbury and the surrounding district at a transport seminar in October last year and was told Metro would look at the possibility but he is still waiting for a reply.
He said: "I have no problem with the idea and would give my full backing to a plan for a new station. It would be ideal for getting to Wakefield, Huddersfield or Leeds."
The last train station to close was the Horbury and Ossett station, underneath Horbury bridge at the bottom of Quarry Hill.
Coun Bryan Denson is also concerned about the state of the transport links serving his ward.
He said: "There has been a lot of unrest since the loss of the bus services.
"Transport is a very serious and urgent issue that needs addressing district wide."
Coun Denson is keen to avoid the sort of rush hour traffic congestion problems experienced at the Sandal and Agbrigg station, caused by people using their cars to drive to the train station.
He said: "It would take a lot of co-ordinating but it would make sense to try and take cars off the road by having park and ride schemes linking with train stations."
Metro confirmed they are now at stage six of their 20-year rail plan for West Yorkshire and are currently looking at 30 possible locations where they would like to see new stations built.
